Acronym
HES-A

Description
The development of the HES was grounded on the concept of health empowerment as “a cognitive state characterized by perceptions of control regarding one’s health and health care; perceptions of competence regarding one’s ability to maintain good health and manage interactions with the health care system; and internalization of health ideas and goals at the individual and societal level.” 16 The original version of the tool was created from the “Diabetes Empowerment Scale Short Form” (DES-SF), which was established to measure the health empowerment of diabetic patients. 26 Park and Park argued that the DES-SF reflects each of the features of the fundamental characteristics of health-related empowerment. 16 HES captures the main elements of health empowerment: “self-control, self-efficacy, problem-solving, psychosocial coping, support, motivation, and decision-making.” 16 The tool has been validated to measure health empowerment among Korean older people. 16 In a previous study, the HES was translated to French and German languages and was tested for psychometric characteristics and factorial validity among women. 27 The study revealed that the French (α = .86) and German (α = .87) versions had acceptable internal consistency reliability when used among women. The study also provided evidence of the one-dimensionality of the French and German versions through confirmatory factor analyses (CFA). 27 The study concluded that the HES could be used to assess the health empowerment of French- and German-speaking women. 27 Hence, we assumed that the HES could also be used to assess these construct among Saudi women.

Acronym
HSCL

Description
The Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL) originated from the Cornell Medical Index (Wider 1948), and was further expanded by investigators at Johns Hopkins University in the 1950s (Frank et al. 1957; Parloff et al. 1954). It was developed initially to measure common psychoneurotic complaints of outpatients (Lipman et al. 1965). There are several versions of this instrument in which items range from a count of 25 to 90 and differ in the constructs measured (e.g. HSCL-25, HSCL-35, and SCL-90) (Derogatis et al. 1974; Derrogatis et al. 1973; Hesbacher et al. 1980). Shorter versions of the instrument also exist (HSCL-10 and HSCL-5); they perform almost as well as HSCL-25 for adolescents (Strand et al. 2003). The 90-item checklist includes measures of psychotic and paranoid symptoms, in addition to anxiety and depression symptoms (Derogatis et al. 1974). On the other hand, the 25-item version focuses more on the presence and intensity of depression and anxiety symptoms (e.g., fear, dizziness, self-blame) (Hesbacher et al. 1980; Nettelbladt et al. 1993).

Acronym
HADS

Description
A tool used to detect the levels of anxiety and depression that a patient is experiencing. The HADS is a fourteen item scale that generates ordinal data. Seven of the items relate to anxiety and seven relate to depression. Zigmond and Snaith created this outcome measure specifically to avoid reliance on aspects of these conditions that are also common somatic symptoms of illness, for example fatigue and insomnia or hypersomnia. This, it was hoped, would create a tool for the detection of anxiety and depression in people with physical health problems.

Acronym
HIP

Description
The Arabic version of the “HIP” questionnaire included 29 items similar to the original questionnaire. Initially, these items were grouped into 7 domains, hereinafter called “standard domains.” The responses to each item ranged from 0 (“not at all”) to 10 (“strongly”). For the majority of items, the higher the marked value, the more serious was the impact. However, for items 1, 4, 6, 9, 10, 14, 25, and 27 [link to the original HIP questionnaire with all items is provided below (8)], the lower the value, the more important was the impact. Wang et al.12 who were the first worldwide to translate this questionnaire (Chinese mandarin version), reversed the scores of the cited items (10-score) to adjust this problem. Any inverted score X was noted XR, and the domains with inverted scores were referred to as “adapted domains.”

HBP-SCP

Description
The HBP SCP was structured to include three scales that can be used concurrently or independently: Behavior, Motivation, and Self-Efficacy. We used the HBP SCP-Behavior scale to create Motivation and Self-Efficacy scales by changing the instructions from “How often do you do the following?” to “How important is it for you to do the following?” and “How confident are you that you could do the following?” respectively. Each HBP SCP scale included 20 items written at the 6th grade reading level, with higher scores indicating higher levels of HBP self-care behavior, motivation, and self-efficacy.

IPQ

Description
The IPQ was developed to measure illness perceptions in a variety of illnesses. This questionnaire assesses perceptions on each of the five dimensions by asking patients for their own beliefs about their condition; The major cognitive components identified from research are: Identity - which is comprised of the label of the illness and the symptoms the patient views as being part of the disease; Cause - personal ideas about aetiology which may include simple single causes or more complex multiple causal models; Time-line - how long the patient believes the illness will last. These can be categorised into acute, chronic or episodic; Consequences - expected effects and outcome of the illness; and Cure/control - how one recovers from, or controls, the illness.
