Article type: Published abstract

Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to translate, culturally adapt and validate the Index of Male Genital Image (IMGI) into the Arabic language for being used in the assessment of male genital self-image satisfaction; a taboo subject that threatens the masculine social meanings of manhood and male dominance in Egypt. Methods: Men from clubs, neighbors, and working place of the researchers were invited to participate in the study. Forward translation, cognitive testing and backward translations were done. IMGI questionnaire was administrated by interviewing men accepting to participate. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected. Internal consistency was estimated using Cronbach's alpha. Discriminant, content and construct validity were assessed. Results: One hundredmen were enrolled in the study. Median age was 32 (28-36) years, 64% were urban population, 76% were married, median marriage duration was 6(3-9) years, and the age at marriage 27(25-28) years. All items of IMGI were reliable (Cronbach's alpha = 0.85). Regarding validity, the scale significantly discriminates between men subgroups. Older, married or divorced, those married at 25 years or more, those with bodymass index ≥25 kg/m2, non-diabetics and normotensives had significantly higher scores (p < 0.05). The six factors of the questionnaire were significantly correlated with the total IMGI score (p < 0.05). The majority of the items were inter-correlated (p < 0.05). Principal component analysis showed that 14 items explained the 70.2% of the variance. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin sampling adequacy was 0.73 and the Bartlett's test of sphericity were significant (p < 0.001). All communalities were above 0.5. Conclusion: The Arabic version of the IMGI is a reliable and valid tool for the assessment of male genital self-image satisfaction among Egyptian men.
