Acronym
HSCT

Description
The Hayling Sentence Completion Test (HSCT), originally developed by Burgess & Shallice, is one of the available tools that evaluate inhibition. It is a measure of prepotent response inhibition that detects frontal lobe dysfunction. In this test, participants hear sentences in which the last word is absent. In the automatic condition, participants are asked to complete sentences correctly (i.e., by a word solidly related to the sentence), reflecting the initiation of a semantically supported automatic response. In the inhibition condition, participants are asked to restrain themselves from saying the cueing word, and to complete the sentence with a totally unrelated word. To perform this task appropriately, participants have to inhibit the related word and its semantic associates.

Acronym
HES-A

Description
The development of the HES was grounded on the concept of health empowerment as “a cognitive state characterized by perceptions of control regarding one’s health and health care; perceptions of competence regarding one’s ability to maintain good health and manage interactions with the health care system; and internalization of health ideas and goals at the individual and societal level.” 16 The original version of the tool was created from the “Diabetes Empowerment Scale Short Form” (DES-SF), which was established to measure the health empowerment of diabetic patients. 26 Park and Park argued that the DES-SF reflects each of the features of the fundamental characteristics of health-related empowerment. 16 HES captures the main elements of health empowerment: “self-control, self-efficacy, problem-solving, psychosocial coping, support, motivation, and decision-making.” 16 The tool has been validated to measure health empowerment among Korean older people. 16 In a previous study, the HES was translated to French and German languages and was tested for psychometric characteristics and factorial validity among women. 27 The study revealed that the French (α = .86) and German (α = .87) versions had acceptable internal consistency reliability when used among women. The study also provided evidence of the one-dimensionality of the French and German versions through confirmatory factor analyses (CFA). 27 The study concluded that the HES could be used to assess the health empowerment of French- and German-speaking women. 27 Hence, we assumed that the HES could also be used to assess these construct among Saudi women.

Acronym
HSCL

Description
The Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL) originated from the Cornell Medical Index (Wider 1948), and was further expanded by investigators at Johns Hopkins University in the 1950s (Frank et al. 1957; Parloff et al. 1954). It was developed initially to measure common psychoneurotic complaints of outpatients (Lipman et al. 1965). There are several versions of this instrument in which items range from a count of 25 to 90 and differ in the constructs measured (e.g. HSCL-25, HSCL-35, and SCL-90) (Derogatis et al. 1974; Derrogatis et al. 1973; Hesbacher et al. 1980). Shorter versions of the instrument also exist (HSCL-10 and HSCL-5); they perform almost as well as HSCL-25 for adolescents (Strand et al. 2003). The 90-item checklist includes measures of psychotic and paranoid symptoms, in addition to anxiety and depression symptoms (Derogatis et al. 1974). On the other hand, the 25-item version focuses more on the presence and intensity of depression and anxiety symptoms (e.g., fear, dizziness, self-blame) (Hesbacher et al. 1980; Nettelbladt et al. 1993).

Acronym
HADS

Description
A tool used to detect the levels of anxiety and depression that a patient is experiencing. The HADS is a fourteen item scale that generates ordinal data. Seven of the items relate to anxiety and seven relate to depression. Zigmond and Snaith created this outcome measure specifically to avoid reliance on aspects of these conditions that are also common somatic symptoms of illness, for example fatigue and insomnia or hypersomnia. This, it was hoped, would create a tool for the detection of anxiety and depression in people with physical health problems.
