Acronym
GHQ-12

Description
The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) is a screening device for identifying minor psychiatric disorders in the general population and within community or non-psychiatric clinical settings such as primary care or general medical out-patients. Suitable for all ages from adolescent upwards – not children, it assesses the respondent’s current state and asks if that differs from his or her usual state. It is therefore sensitive to short-term psychiatric disorders but not to long-standing attributes of the respondent. The self-administered questionnaire focuses on two major areas: The inability to carry out normal functions The appearance of new and distressing phenomena. This version of the GHQ is very quick to administer and score as it contains only 12 questions. It has comparable psychometric properties to the longer versions even though it only takes around two minutes to complete. Given its speed of administration, it is often used in research studies where it is impractical to administer a longer form. The GHQ-12 was prepared by removing the items endorsed by ‘physically ill’ respondents from the GHQ-60. Items were then divided into those in which agreement indicated either health or illness. Within each group, items were selected which had the highest slopes in the original item analysis. The GHQ-12 yields only an overall total score.

Acronym
AKPS

Description
The Anterior Knee Pain Scale (AKPS) – sometimes called the Kujala Scale (Kujala et al 1993) is a 13-item knee-specific self-report questionnaire. It documents response to six activities thought to be associated specifically with anterior knee pain syndrome (walking, running, jumping, climbing stairs, squatting, and sitting for prolonged periods with knees bent), as well as symptoms such as limp, inability to weight bear through the affected limb, swelling, abnormal patellar movement, muscle atrophy and limitation of knee flexion. The AKPS asks about duration of symptoms and limb(s) affected. The maximum score is 100 and lower scores indicate greater pain/disability. Scoring is hierarchical using various types of categorisation including ‘no difficulty – unable’ and ‘no pain – severe pain.’ Some sections incorporate grading of the distance able to be walked or run without pain. The section on stair climbing distinguishes those with pain only on descending stairs from those who experience pain both ascending and descending. CAARMS

Description
The CAARMS is an instrument that assesses psychopathology characteristic of the prodromal phase of psychotic disorders and may therefore indicate impending onset of psychosis. It is used to determine whether a person meets the UHR criteria and psychotic transition. This is a semi-structured interview consisting of seven subscales: positive symptoms, cognitive symptoms, emotional disturbances, negative symptoms, behavioural changes, physical or motor changes, and general psychopathology. Each of these subscales is scored for severity and frequency. The scores in each subscale range from 0 to 6. The CAARMS is also used to determine the existence of a temporal relationship between symptoms and the use of substances, as well as the date of onset and end of symptoms, therefore the duration of each subcategory of symptoms. MSQOL-54

Description
The MSQOL-54 is a multidimensional health-related quality of life measure that combines both generic and MS-specific items into a single instrument. (Vickrey et al, 1995) (Vickrey et al, 1997) The developers utilized the SF-36 as the generic component to which 18 items were added to tap MS-specific issues such as fatigue, cognitive function, etc. This 54-item instrument generates 12 subscales along with two summary scores, and two additional single-item measures. The subscales are: physical function, role limitations-physical, role limitations-emotional, pain, emotional well-being, energy, health perceptions, social function, cognitive function, health distress, overall quality of life, and sexual function. The summary scores are the physical health composite summary and the mental health composite summary. The single item measures are satisfaction with sexual function and change in health. Acronym
CL-FODS

Description
The Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale (CL-FODS) is used in assessing attitudes toward death and the process of dying for both oneself and others. It is organised into four separate subscales: Fear of Death of Self, Fear of Dying of Self, Fear of Death of Others, and Fear of Dying of Others. The first version of the CL-FODS (Collett & Lester, 1969) contained 36 items, with a different number of items for each of the subscales (9, 10, 6, and 11 items, respectively). Later, Lester (1990, 1994) presented a revised version in which all the subscales had 8 items. In a more recent study, Lester and Abdel-Khalek (2003) have undertaken a correction of the scale by eliminating a clearly deviate item on the ‘‘Death of Others’’ subscale that reduced the reliability of the scale. They also eliminated an item with a lower item-total correlation on each of the other three subscales in order for all of them to have 7 items each.
